Several other ‘interactive’projects could prove to be of long-term practical use. Using Xenopus as a model, with extensive integration of information from the mouse, an ‘interactive gastrulation’project could prove useful to the biological community and students. There are well over 100 genes known to be expressed in Xenopus and in the mouse during gastrulation, and the hierarchy of gene activation during gastrulation in vertebrates is completely different from that in Drosophila. A single curator would be sufficient for the development of an interactive gastrulation project. Other suggested interactive projects include ‘interactive apoptosis’ to document the gene interactions in apoptosis, and an ‘interactive cell cycle’to portray the complexities of cell-cycle regulation.
