The changes induced by machining of hard steels in their surface layer have been investigated. Attention has been given to the microstructure and mesohardness of very thin (a few micrometers) surface layers of the quenched and tempered alloy steels. It has been found that both the kind of cutting tool and its wear rate highly influences the workpiece surface layer. The chemical composition of the work material is also an essential factor.
