As compared with other structures of the amphibian head, such as the eye and ear, comparatively little experimental work has been done on the olfactory organ. Most of the information concerning this organ has resulted from incidental observations made while one or another of the head struetures mas being investigated. A great deal of the work dealing primarily with the olfactory organ has concerned itself with its regenerative ability. Bell ('07) has made obserrations on regeneration, as have Spemann ('12)'Burr ('16), Ekman ('24), Luna ('15), and others. Other workers such as Rohlich ('31)'Carpenter ('37)'and Manfredonia ('38) have been interested in establishing the position of the presumptive olfactory material at various embryonic stages. Despite the fact that it has been demonstrated (Spemann,'12; Siggia,'36; Carpenter, 37) that the olfactory organ in some forms is determined at the early neurula stage and may develop in the absence of the telencephalon, most of the investigators have maintained that the telencephalon is the inducer of the olfactory organ. This view has been held by Mangold ('33) Raven ('33) Adelmann ('as), Alderman ('35), Holtfreter ('33,'35,'36,'38), and Woerdemann ('38). Mangold and Adelmann have, however, admitted the possibility that the roof of the archenteron may be the responsible inducer. Siggia ('36) has made this latter point his basic postulate.
