Recently we have reported the synthesis and the study of the structure of block copolymers with a hydrophobic polyvinyl block and a hydrophilic polypeptide block”. Such copolymers may be considered as simplified models of amphipatic proteins”. Among membrane proteins, glycoproteins are of particular interest: they are receptors for a variety of viruses, lectins, and specific antibodies3’and are implicated in cell recognition and cell contact inhibition3’. Thus, it is very attractive to obtain copolymers which should be able to simulate the behaviour of glycoproteins. For that purpose we have undertaken the synthesis and the study of block copolymers with a hydrophilic saccharide block and a hydrophobic peptide block. In this paper, we shall briefly sum up the synthesis and the study of the structure of amphipatic block copolymers 0”-Eb and Ofl-Eb where the hydrophilic saccharide block is a carbohydrate fraction (0 “or 0”) of a glycoprotein (ovomucoid) and the hydrophobic block is a poly (p-benzyl-L-glutamate) block (Eb).
