This article studies the assignment of the bystin gene BYSL to human chromosome band 6p21. 1 by in situ hybridization. Bystin is a cytoplasmic protein that binds directly to trophinin and tastin which mediate homophilic adhesion between trophoblast and endometrial epithelial cells. Bystin which contains many phosphorylation sites for protein kinases may transmit cell adhesion signals leading to cell proliferation. In Drosophila, a bystin-like gene locates next to the ribosome 56 gene which regulates cell proliferation.
