A detailed account is given of the position and movements of the eyes under various conditions. On repeated examination of 234 persons, mostly adults, only 40 below 20 yrs., and a very few below 10, it was found that there is no one position of the eyes that can be called natural for sleep. It is usually horizontal or upwards, usually symmetrical but not always. Movements may occur and are slow and incoordinate. Motion pictures were taken of the sequence of events in closing and opening the eyes, which consists of 2 phases, the eyelid phase (palpebral phase) and the global phase. In the latter the eyes change their position. The order is reversed in opening. The author suggests that there is some direct connection between the acquirement and use of binocular vision and the upward position of the eyes in their position of rest. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: S. H.
