The development of the metabolizable energy (ME) system has greatly increased our knowledge of the energy value of feeds, the requirement of the cow for energy and the likely milk yield response to increments of energy (feed) at different stages of lactation. It is thus possible to treat the cow as an individual and allocate food according to her production potential. T o do so requires the regular recording of each cow’s performance, regular adjustment of diets and extensive investment in the equipment required to feed cows individually.
