Discussion of tidal changes on a geological timescale has appeared as sections in review articles on sea-level change (Kidson, 1982; Tooley, 1985; Devoy, 1987; Pirazzoli, 1996) and received mention in others (Van de Plassche, 1986; Pugh, 1987; Emery and Aubrey, 1991; Pirazzoli, 1991; Bird, 1993; Woodworth, 1993; Woodroffe, 1994; IPCC, 1996a), but there has been no comprehensive appraisal of the published literature on this theme. It is clearly impossible to examine all aspects of tidal changes in this report; instead, an overview will be given of advances in modelling tidal changes, and studies of current tidal trends, future predictions and their potential socioeconomic impacts, in the context of previous knowledge on these topics. Recent developments in identification of present or former tidal activity from sedimentological, palaeoecological, etc., perspectives and the impact of tidal changes on coastal evolution will form the subject of future annual reports.
