The book is organized into nine chapters covering leadership and strategic planning, policy and operations, faculty, student services, student retention, course management systems and software, and marketing. Chapter 1, ‘‘Introduction to Online Education,’’ briefly defines online education, cites limited sources (e.g., Moore) on distance education theory, and introduces the major topics covered in Chapters 2–8. In Chapter 2, ‘‘Leadership and Strategic Planning,’’ the authors cite authorities in organization theory (e.g., Mintzberg) and provide examples from case studies to support the need for systematic and strategic planning as the foundation for program development. Chapter 3, ‘‘Policy and Operations,’’ addresses the diverse matters involved in the day-to-day operations of an online program.
