Chitosan is an essential natural polymer which able to adsorb metal content from waste water. As a heavy metal adsorbent material chitosan has several limitations including relatively low mechanical properties and the solubility is affected by solution’s pH. Chitosan modification which is using natrium tripolyphosphate as cross linker agent has been done to improve these properties. Chitosan can be modified with sodium tripolyphosphate as cross-linking agent. This research made and characterized chitosan – tripolyphosphate by using two variations of chitosan concentration 0.5 mg/l and 3 mg/l. Chitosan modification with ionic gelation method from chitosan and natrium – tripolyphosphate reduced the size of chitosan to micrometer size. The result showed that chitosan synthesized at lower concentration have a lower level of agglomeration which analysed by SEM. TGA analysis on both samples showed that the chitosan that has been cross linking with phosphate group has a fairly good thermal stability up to 800 oC. FT-IR analysis on both samples showed similar characteristics, especially at a wavelength where peak could be seen significantly.
