Studies performed in the last 10 years have shown that the renal glomeruli are not only mechanical filters but structures capable of more complex behavior [1, 2]. The purpose of this short review is to describe some observations which have contributed to the present understanding of the morphological basis of glomerular filtration of macromolecules in normal and pathologic condition.
