The volume of scientific literature and research on lipids and atherosclerosis is large and daunting. In this review, we consider only selected recent research on the epidemiologic association between rates of human atherosclerotic diseases and levels of blood lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoproteins, and other elements of lipid metabolism.(Here, we use the term lipids to familiarly represent all blood lipid-related compounds, unless otherwise noted. In addition, as used in this paper, atherosclerotic disease is by and large synonymous with clinical atherosclerotic disease.) The tremendous advances in understanding lipid metabolism and the biology of atherogenesis and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (1) are only now being translated into studies of human atherogenesis risk, but general review of these advances is beyond the scope of this presentation. A concise history of the clinical and pathobiologic aspects of the lipid-coronary disease association has recently been published (2).Abbreviations: HDL, high density lipoprotein; LDL, low density lipoprotein; VLDL, very low density lipoprotein.
