Summary1.Receptor mechanisms, which enableNotonecta to localise surfacewave producing prey, were investigated behaviourally, electrophysiologically and by subsequent histological analysis.2.Spectrograms of waves produced by the prey showed a frequency range which fitted well the range of waves which stimulated the waterboatsman to perform prey catching responses. Under natural conditions mainly wave frequencies from 20 to 50 Hz formed the intensity maximum of the relevant signals.3.By means of blocking several sense organs which could possibly serve as receptors and following behavioural tests two types of “wave” receptors were found in proximal and distal parts of fore- and middlelegs ofNotonecta.4.Signal tracing in the main leg nerve showed that the tarsal scolopidial organ— which is equally sensitive in all three leg pairs of the backswimmer—is the distal receptor. The receptor controls only movements of the claw and is most sensitive to frequencies greater than 20 Hz. Minimum threshold amplitude is 0,5 μ at frequencies of 100 to 150 Hz when there is solid coupling of the claw with the vibrator. Under this condition the sensory cells respond to frequencies up to at least 1000 Hz.5.There is evidence from electrophysiological and histological work for the presence of five pure phasic and four phasic-tonic sensory elements in the tarsal scolopidial organ. The latter elements-small in size-give information about angular velocity and instantaneous position of the claw, whereas the five phasic cells show only activity in times of movement of the joint. Sinusoidal movements in the frequency range from 0,5 to 150 Hz produce one impulse per sine-cycle.6.The impulses released by oscillations of the claw are strictly phase-related. Bending of the claw is shown to be the most effective stimulus.7.Delay times between single impulses of the receptors in the right and left leg of a pair are possibly transduced into the angle the animal has to turn its body in the direction of the wave producing prey.
