Although BDD remains under-recognized by mental health and other medical professionals, it has been described for more than a century and reported around the world. 34 BDD is included as a separate diagnosis in DSM-IV, psychiatry’s diagnostic manual. 2 As defined in DSM-IV, BDD consists of a preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance; if a slight physical anomaly is present, the person’s concern is markedly excessive. The preoccupation causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
