Like the ubiquitous butler in many a trite murder mystery, the germinal center of organized lymphoid tissue has long been suspected of playing a central role in the mystery of the immune response to antigenic stimulus. In this situation also, extensive detective work by numerous investigators has produced an almost compelling body of circumstantial evidence to implicate the germinal center, if not as one of the principals, then at least as an important accomplice. As its name implies, the germinal center was long considered to be a hyperactive focus of general lymphopoiesis, and more recently it has been implicated as a center for antigen localization and retention (1,2) or alternatively as the seat of immunologic memory (3,4).
