findings indicate true differences, or whether they are due to variability in Denver and Chicago in the definition of neighborhood units, the rules used to select them, the operationalization of social composition, the measurement of proximal contexts (e.g., family dysfunction), the definition of success indicators or to random variation. Moreover, the most “unsuccessful” youth – incarcerated, institutionalized (in drug treatment or other facilities), or killed in gang wars – would be unavailable to participate in this study. Does their absence challenge any conclusions about growing up in disadvantaged urban neighborhoods? The MacArthur Network collaborators have carried out a most ambitious, path-breaking study. Convincing evidence supports their conclusion that neighborhood variation in healthy youth development is attributable to their distinct social organization and culture. They show that multiple social contexts explain individual differences in success outcomes. The findings of this research will be of great interest to sociologists, psychologists and other developmental scientists, as well as to youth policy-makers and designers of intervention programs. The authors emphasize that if such efforts are to be effective, they must be multi-contextual in scope.
