In the course of a clinical study of 120 cases of zoster seen in a group of general practices a number of patients presented symptoms and signs highly suggestiveof zoster but without a rash, a condition which has beenrecorded previously by a few observers and which was termed zona fruste" by Widal (1907) and" zoster sine herpete" by Weber (1916). Zoster sine herpete may present as a variety of syndromes. From the present study it would appear that these syndromes are far less rare than the very few instances recorded in the literature would lead one to suppose.
