Ferrioxamine and desferrioxamine reacted with the OH radical with a 2nd-order rate constant equal to 1.3 .times. 1010 M-1 s-1. Conditions for the use of desferrioxamine as a probe for the role of Fe salts in the formation of OH radicals in biochemical systems were discussed.
