The advent of the atomic age has created new problems in therapy of acute total body radiation which have not been encountered previously. Exposure to dangerous amounts of radiation may occur following an atomic explosion planned or accidental, because of accidents occurring in nuclear reactors, or from accidental exposure to excessive amounts of radioactive isotopes. Many conflicting and diverse theories as to the cause of acute radiation illness have been advanced, and we may safely assume that the pathogenesis of this condition is probably due to a number of factors, the interaction of which is not clearly understood. Some of the theories which have been proposed may be listed as follows., 1. Disturbance of Acid-Base Balance.
