Persistent hiccup is rare. It can be a clue to one or more important diseases in the same individual. Previously hiccup was thought to be due to a single disease that produced an abnormal irritation of the phrenic nerve or of the higher centers. The following data suggest that the presence of other diseases in a significant number of patients may point to several causes of hiccup in the same patient. In 220 patients with intractable hiccup, 92% of female patients had psychogenic hiccup while 93% of the males had organic disease. Of the males with nonsurgical organic disease, 61% had additional organic disease or diseases, each capable of producing hiccup by itself, 26% had diaphragmatic hernia, and 34% had evidence of atherosclerosis. Of the patients with diaphragmatic hernia, 73% had other disease.
