The occurrence of quaternary alkaloids in Tinospora [widely used as medicinals in Africa and Asia] (and Parabaena) species (Menispermaceae) were studied. The main components were generally the protoberberine bases berberine and palmatine, with jatorrhizine an occasional minor constituent and the aporphine base, magnoflorine. Choline was also often present. Only magnoflorine was detected in the Parabaena material examined.
