Much has been written about the centrality of narrative to an understanding of the person. The basis of the argument put forward in this article is that narrative and narrativity are centrally constitutive of the personhood and the Self This being said, the current conceptualisation of narrative and narrativity excludes some individuals and groups of people, such as people with dementia. Relatively recently there has been a move toward developing a citizenship model of dementia as a framework within which people with dementia can be empowered. This development is, however, currently under-theorised. The argument presented here is that in order to develop that model we need to find ways of integrating narrative and citizenship, thus linking the personal and the political. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc.
