The plant communities of 4 subalpine meadows in Washington state were studied. Results on niche width and spp. overlap as a function of competitive intensity are presented. Dominant spp. included Festuca idahoensis, Eriophyllum lantanum, Phlox diffusa, Antennaria lanata, Carex spectabilis, Lupinus latifolius, Danthonia intermedia, Arenaria capillaris and Carex phaeocephala. With increase in competitive intensity, niche width of dominant spp. changed little and overlap between space-holding spp. increased. Mean niche width, niche width of competitively inferior spp., total overlap and overlap among weak competitors declined.
