Many physical illnesses are in some way related to alcohol abuse and occur more often in alcohol abusers than in the general population. The different interactions between alcohol consumption and disease will be reviewed in this chapter and, I hope, will stimulate the reader to think about the gaps in our knowledge of alcohol-related diseases. These physical illnesses interact in many ways with psychological and social aspects of alcohol abuse, which is why professionals involved with problem drinkers need to be aware of these physical illnesses. Because of space limitations, the description of the various diseases is brief; the reader is referred to appropriate sources for in-depth study. These sources include the current editions of textbooks of internal medicine and its subspecialties as well as current literature reviews cited in the text (Kissin & Begleiter, 1974; Seixas, Williams, & Eggleston, 1975; Tarter & Sugerman, 1976).
