The total ethanolamine phosphatides of the dog and pig kidney were isolated by T.L.C. (thin-layer chromatography) and the fatty acid methyl esters and dimethylacetals derived by transmethylation were identified by combined gas–liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry methods. It was shown that 40–50% of the ethanolamine phosphatides from both sources were piasmalogens in which the long-chain vinyl ethers were paired largely with arachidonic acid. Although the vinyl ethers of the pig kidney yielded mainly the palmitaldehyde, those of the dog kidney generated nearly equal proportions of palmit-, stear-, and oleoaldehydes. No evidence was obtained for the occurrence of nitrogenous bases other than ethanolamine in these phosphatide fractions. The significance of the above observations in relation to the potential anti-renin activity of the kidney phospholipids is pointed out.
