SIR—Gait disorders are common with advancing age, and are associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes such as falls, dementia and death [1–3]. Hence, determining mobility in older adults is of importance in research studies. However, older adults may either not participate or drop out of research studies for a variety of reasons including physical disability, relocation, lack of transportation, or absence of caregivers. Telephone-based instruments can help maintain contact in these circumstances, and have been used in studies of dementia and depression [4, 5]. While mobility questions are part of many general health questionnaires [6, 7], a specific telephone-based mobility questionnaire that can be used to identify subjects for research studies has been lacking. Our aim in this study was to test the reliability and validity of a brief telephone-based mobility assessment questionnaire (TMAQ) for identifying abnormal gait in communityresiding older adults. Reliability of clinical gait examination is dependent on the experience of the examiner. On the other hand, the validity of quantitative gait measures is not well established in community settings. In the absence of gold standards, we used both clinical and quantitative gait assessments as criterion standards.
