Familial aggregation of seizure disorders is well established, but the extent to which genetic factors explain this familial aggregation remains unclear. Possible explanations for increased incidence of seizure disorders among relatives of affected individuals include shared behavior patterns and common environmental exposures, in addition to genetic factors. The role of genetic factors in seizure disorders is difficult to determine, in part because of their clinical and etiologic heterogeneity. The manifestations of seizures range from barely visible lapses in consciousness to the full-blown tonic-clonicAbbreviation: RR, relative risk. 1 Gertrude H.
