A short course concerning clay minerals is a particularly appropriate undertaking to accompany the 1981 Annual Meeting of the Mineralogical Association of Canada in Calgary. Geologists involved in exploration for, and exploitation of, conventional and unconventional petroleum resources have become increasingly interested in the behaviour of clay minerals in clastic rocks, especially during episodes of artificially induced fluid-rock interaction. This short course, and its handbook, are directed primarilyat such an audience. Chapters 1 and 2 (Brindley) provide an essentialoutline of the structures, chemical compositions, and identification of clay minerals. Chapter 3 (Hower) deals specifically with the nature and recognition of interstratified clay minerals, an import ant yet oft-neglected aspect of clay mineral studies. The significance of clay mineral assemblages in shales is elucidated in Chapter 4 (Hower). The implications of clay mineralogy for production from clastic reservoirs are discussed in Chapter 5 (Almon and Davies) and Chapter 6 (Thomas). Chapter 7 (Almon) illustrates how a thorough study of clay mineral distributions and diagenetic patterns in clastic rocks can assist exploration for areas of favourable porosity and permeability. The interrelationships between clay mineralogy, diagenesis and sandstone cementation are explained in Chapter 8 (Boles). Finally, the role of thermodynamics in solving problems in mineral authigenesis is explored by Chapter 9 (Hutcheon).
