RAWING OCCUPIES a symbolic realm generally reserved for the visual arts. As such, it represents a form of expression viewed as separate from language. Yet, visual images are an active part of human thought processes, especially when planning or executing activities in their daily living. For conveying thoughts, the normal adult reljes on an elaborate linguistic system that is far more thorough, accurate, and efficient than any other means of communication. For the expressively restricted aphasic (ERA) adult, however, communication through verbal expression may be impossible. If it is, a nonlinguistic system, such as drawing, becomes a viable alternative.
