A concentrated solution of the chlorides of the rare earths containing 70% or more of euro-pium gives uponreduction of the latter with zinc and treatment with concentrated hydrochloric acid a crystalline precipitate of europous chloride dihydrate, EuCL^ HgO, practically free from ac-companying rare earths. 2. By means of this reaction about 500 g. of europium oxalate has been prepared, the high purity of which is shown by spectrograms by Dr. King.
