Patients (65) with surgery for congenital blepharoptosis of the upper eyelid were reviewed during a 3-yr period. Anisometropia, strabismus or amblyopia occurred in 19 patients. Postoperatively, 10 of the 65 patients developed or increased their astigmatism in the operated eye. In 4 of these patients amblyopia attributed to this postooperative astigmatism developed. Blepharoptosis surgery done in the first few years of life may contribute to the development of astigmatism and amblyopia in some patients.
