Adult mice (91 to 231 days old) of 4 inbred strains and the hybrid of 2 of them were irradiated with X-rays (250 kvcp, HVL 1.6 mm Cu, single whole-body exposure, tissue dose rate[image]35 r/ minute. The LD50(19) was practically the same as the LD50(28). Females may have been slightly more resistant than males, but not by more than 4% of the LD50. Survival data were analyzed for strain differences. The slope function of the probit-transformed dose-effect (killing) curve was the same for all strains. The LD50(28) determinations for the different strains were: C3H, 665 r; A/He, 632 r; C57BL, 618 r; BALB/c, 544 r. Crossing the BALB/c and A/He strains gave F1 progeny (CAF1) with an LD50 of [image] 650 r. It was suggested that the lower LD50 of the BALB/c strain was an expression of recessive genetic factors. For doses below the LD100 the death-rate curves of the A/He, BALB/c, CAF1, and C3H strains had a single prominent peak during the interval 12-15 days postirradiation. For the C57BL strain, the death rate during the interval 3-20 days postirradiation was relatively constant, although with indications of 2 minor peaks.
