SUMMARY The authors investigated the development of the gonads and nidamental glands in cuttle-fish, Sepia officinalis, by examining 130 embryos ranging from the XIII to the XX Naef's stage and 49 young specimens from the fourth to the tenth postembryonic days. According to their findings, sex differentiation occurs during embryonic life as it is showed by the greater growth of the female than the male gonad. As the first primordia of the nidamental glands appear in females only at the XVIII embryonic developmental stage, after the volumetric differentiation of the gonad has begun, it remains to be solved whether this female secondary sexual characteristic is to be considered an eusexual character, or a somatosexual one as formerly supposed.
