ObjectiveWe investigated the relationships among T-helper cell subtypes, interferon (INF)-γ, interleukin (IL)-4, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-22 and three traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes in patients with psoriasis vulgaris.MethodsMedical records of patients with psoriasis vulgaris (with different TCM types: bloodheat syndrome (BHS), blood-stasis syndrome (BSS), and blood-dryness syndrome (BDS)), and healthy individuals were examined to compare peripheral blood Th1, Th2, Th17, and Th22 cells and levels of INF-γ, IL-4, TNF-α and IL-22.ResultsIn patients with BHS and BSS, the Th1 ratio was significantly higher than that in healthy controls. Moreover, that in patients with BHS was significantly higher than that in patients with BDS. INF-γ ratio was significantly higher in individuals with BHS and BSS than in healthy controls. And that with BDS, BSS were significantly higher than that with BDS. The Th2, IL-4 ratios in patients with BHS, BSS, and BDS were significantly lower than those in health controls. The Th17, TNF-α ratios were significantly higher in individuals with BHS and BSS than in healthy controls. As well the Th17 ratio with BHS and BSS were significantly higher than that with BDS. Th22 ratio was significantly higher in individuals with BHS and BDS than in healthy individuals and individuals with BSS. IL-22 levels were significantly higher in these individuals than in healthy controls, and higher levels were observed in patients with BHS than in patients with BSS.ConclusionSubstantial variations in T-helper cell subtype ratios were observed in patients with psoriasis with different TCM syndromes, providing insights into the clinicopathological features of psoriasis.
