The retardation of the optical system of the living human eye was measured psychophysically as a function of the place of entry of the incident light in the pupil plane with the help of interference patterns projected on the retina. The retardation of the ocular media increased more along the horizontal and vertical meridians than along the diagonal meridians. If the contribution of lens and vitreous to the measured retardation is neglected, a corneal birefringence can be computed. The average value of this birefringence for 2 observers was 0.0020. The polarization of the light at the retina was calculated for a linearly polarized beam, entering the eye through a 6 mm pupil, making use of the measured retardation.
