The values obtained for the constants are shown in Table 1. Serious reservations have to be made in interpreting results such as these", though, as a first approximation, it is permissible to identify the acid dissociation constants of equations (2) and (3) with those of the reaction scheme. The values of K, and K, suggest that both are dissociations from imidazole groups of histidine residues. One of these is required in the base form and the other in the acid form for catalytic activity. The measured constants are “macroscopic'º; but, because of their relatively large separation, they probably do not differ greatly from the intrinsic pK values of the acid and base sites.
