MATERIALS AND METHODSThirty-one male hypex rats purchased from the Hormone Assay Laboratory of Chicago were studied. Hypophysectomies were performed when the rats weighed 200 g and were approximateIy 50 days old. They were kept by the supplier for IO postoperative(PO) days before being sent to us. After their arrival, they were housed in individual cages and supplied with food (Purina laboratory chow) and water ad libitum. Individual body weight was measured l-3 times a week throughout the course of this study. Those rats which gained more than 10 g in the 3 weeks prior to hypothalamic operation were considered incompletely hypophysectomized and were discarded. The completeness of the hypophysectomy was checked at autopsy when the sella turcica and the base of the brain were examined for pituitary remnants under a magnifying glass.
