PLANTAGO LANCEOLATA, L.-I have beeii watching, for somne weeks past, a plaint of comnmoni Ribwort,(Plant (ago lanceolata, L. which has interested me very muich. The styles made their appear anice, as is the habit of this genius, and seemed to be quiite lonig for the species. After a timne they begfan to benld down so that the stigfma entered the tube of the corolla. aind sooni the whole style was coiled up in the corolla tube, remaining there for a dlav or more, in some inistances, when it resumed its erect positioin. I theni com-menced to watch for the appearalnce of the stamenis, but nionie made their appearaniee. As this seemed singutlar, I made close examination of the blossoms, to find (stamenis or anthers, for I coul (d niot imagine why the styles bent dlowni inito the corolla uinless there were anthers present. But though I examinied scor-es I failed to (letect any sigfn of sta: meni or anither, except in a. few inistances a ligulate appendage was founiid in the place of the stamenl, perhaps it might be considered ap) etaloid filamenit, but niot the least sigIl of an anlther was to be found. Some of the spikes are quite well fertilized, wlhich is not strange, some onlly partially so, anid oni some there is onily onie fertile ovary. This singular behavior of the styles has been in operationi for weeks, going oni in succession from the base to the summit of the spikes, so that very frequenitly on the same spike maY be seeni the coiled styles, below them those that have beeni coiled up but have become straight again, above them those that are developinlg, makinig, on the whole. a singular spectacle. Now whlat principle of instinct, or" natural selectioni" operated here? For evidenitly the stigomas were seekinig after somethim] g that hadi not beenl supplied in the ordinary manner. I lhave wateled many other planlts of this species btut nione others have beeni fotund (i showing stuch va-riations, or any out of the tisual linle of developiuienit.
