The first highly purified molecule believed to have inhibin activity was isolated from seminal plasma. It contains 3 1 amino acids, and is related structurally to enolase. This molecular entity was termed a-inhibin'and is believed to originate from seminal vesicle. P-Inhibin was also isolated from seminal plasma. It has 94 amino acids, is similar if not identical to a protein of prostatic origin that has been termed PSP94: P-microseminoprotein,'or 16-kDa protein! The gonadal inhibins and activins subsequently isolated from follicular and fete testis fluid are dimeric glycoproteins structurally similar to transforming growth factor-/3 and Mullerian-inhibiting substance.'In the present report we will consider only the inhibin-related proteins that are of gonadal origin.
