Urban public space, at least in the meaning we usually attribute to it, is a generic and relatively recent term. In fact, we cannot speak of public spaces for theagoraiof the Hellenistic Romanpolis, theforaand the baths of Roman antiquity or for thesoukandbazarof the Arab-Muslim Mediterranean cities, or the Persianmaidanand similar spaces of the Levant. These spaces had a specific functional destination (commercial, institutional, representative, celebratory, and sanitary) and a name that was equally precise in urban topography. The same consideration can be made for the medieval squares, and, even more so, for the Renaissance and Baroque squares, linked to the formal needs of the representative scenography wanted by the new princes. The Modern Movement in architecture is also scarcely interested in public spaces, reserving its attention to the economic, typological and social renewal of the building heritage when designing the new rationalquartieri. The “public space” is not characterized by one or more precise functions. Actually, it has no function. The idea of public space emerges when we are involved in urban situations that are not yet consolidated and formalized. Therefore, the idea of “public space” is linked to the solution of the problem of urban voids. The project aims at transforming an “empty” into a “full” space, rich of meanings and values that throw new light on the urban context, and weave new relationships within it.
