Because of the existence of high concentration of residual PAM (polyacrylamide), the produced water is toughly treated to reach reinjection or discharge standards by a routine treatment process. In this paper, an action and role of PAM was initially analyzed on the emulsification of the oilfield wastewater; then, an oil/water interface structure of PAM-reinforced emulsions was schematically illustrated. Based on revealing the facts, the key mechanism of the demulsification was focused on the critically breaking of PAM on interfacial film of emulsions. Herein, a STEP (solar thermal electrochemical process) directional degradation of polymer on interfacial film of emulsions was proposed and developed for the efficient demulsification of the polymer-flooding produced water in favor of green and sustainable remediation of wastewater. The results demonstrated that the STEP polymer degradation allows the requisite thermodynamic potential of PAM oxidation to be lowered from 1.206 to 0.979 V experimentally due to...
