In a further study of the Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT) [see V.B. 40, abst. 1516], over 22000 samples of bovine serum were examined by this test and also by the serum agglutination test (SAT) and/or the complement fixation test (CFT). While most of the RBPT-negative samples were also negative to the other tests, 5 were positive to SAT and 17 were positive to CFT. 86 of the 1396 RBPT-positive samples gave inconclusive results in SAT or CFT. The sensitivity of the RBPT (its ability to detect infected cattle) was calculated to be 96.2% and its specificity (accuracy) 97.1%. Serum samples taken from calves at intervals after inoculation of Strain 19 vaccine became negative to the RBPT and CFT sooner than to the CFT.-HMB.
