This 344-page book contains the 32 papers given at a workshop in April 1975 by the leading workers in the field of iron metabolism. The complexity of this subject is reflected in the different chapters, each of which contains the latest clinical, haematological and biochemical research and thinking from the appropriate leading stable. All aspects of metabolism are covered, the sections being divided into iron balance, deficiency, overload and principles of therapy. Topics range from mucosal iron-binding proteins, haemoglobin oxygen transport, ferritin and erythrokinetic studies of refractory anaemias to clinical aspects of pregnancy, chronic renal disease and haemochromatosis. Each paper has up-to-date references, and the discussions are helpful, pertinent and brief. The book is not principally aimed at biochemists, and has something in it for everyone. It is well produced, with excellent graphs, figures and electron micrographs (though I found the figures in the chapter on clinical aspects of absorption and turnover far too detailed), and the editors have been able to maintain a fluent style throughout. This book will be of greatest value to those directly involved in iron research. Although I would not recommend it as a standard for biochemists, I feel it would do justice to any library bookshelf, either biochemical or medical.
