16例志贺氏菌病发生在新生儿期报告。4名婴儿在医院托儿所发病，2名死于肠道穿孔后的腹膜炎。在家中患病的12名婴儿的病情严重程度各不相同；全部痊愈，无明显后遗症。简要总结以前报告的8例病例。该年龄组志贺氏菌病的临床表现缺乏许多较大婴儿和儿童的典型特征。感染源似乎是母亲。
Sixteen cases of shigellosis occurring during the neonatal period are reported. Four infants developed their disease in the hospital nursery and 2 died of peritonitis following intestinal perforation. The severity of illness varied in the 12 infants who became ill at home; all recovered without obvious sequelae. The 8 previously reported cases are briefly summarized. The clinical manifestations of shigellosis in this age group lack the distinctive features typical of the disease in many older infants and children. The source of infection appears to be the mother.
