Carcinogen-induced squamous cell carcinomas in the rabbit, mouse, hamster and hedgehog, when ulcerated, show a red fluorescence with UV light, just as they do in man. Dermato-fibrosarcomas in the rat also showed red fluorescence on their ulcerated surfaces. Some benign epithelial tumors of the skin of experimental animals show red fluorescence; this was seen especially in animals bearing a fluorescent carcinoma elsewhere on the skin. Traumatic ulcers do not generally show red fluorescence, but one ulcer in a rabbit bearing a squamous cancer became positive. Transfer of red fluorescent necrotic material from carcinomas to traumatic ulcers in normal rabbits did not establish red fluorescence in these ulcers. The results do not support the idea that the red fluorescence is due to porphyrins produced by microbial activity on the ulcerated surface of tumors.
