The use of metal injection moulding (MIM) has increased very rapidly in the past two decades in non-traditional industrial fields such as implants manufacturing. This book is a handbook, in the true sense of the word: it contains very up-to-date information on market, technological, quality and practical issues. The book has four parts, each consisting of contributions from several authors who are world authorities in those specific fields. Part 1 concerns processing and targets aspects such as designing for MIM, powder technology tooling, moulding, de-binding and sintering. Part 2 focuses on quality issues including modelling and simulation, defects and process control. Part 3 is devoted to special MIM processes – some of these very recent – such as micro MIM. Finally, Part 4 is devoted to specific materials injection such as steels (stainless and tool steel), hard metals, Ti alloys, and materials for microelectronics and magnetic applications. The first chapter focuses on market and industrial structure, including perceived trends. This is a comprehensive book with very recent research outputs and practical examples of application. All the chapters present a significant number of references. These will be most useful as additional literature for the readers interested into going deeper in the topic. From the environmental point of view, it should be stressed that MIM, as a metals processing technology, brings considerable benefits over more traditional technologies such as foundry and casting. In fact, the more negative environmental impacts such as generation of hazardous wastes comprising (sometimes) heavy metals, air emissions and noise, are greatly reduced by the use of the technology described in this handbook. Further, the use of energy is much more rational in MIM than in traditional foundry and casting.
