Thrips are important pests of a wide range of agricultural crops worldwide, such as fruit, vegetables and ornamental crops. Eleven species of thrips are known to be pests of fruit in Japan and several species often co-occur on the same host plant (Umeya et al., 1988; Tsuchiya et al., 1992). Thrips are very small insects that show a high degree of similarity in appearance, particularly during the immature stages, which can make them extremely difficult to identify at the species level. Early and accurate identification of thrips species is important in species-specific control programmes, especially for thrips that have acquired insecticide resistance (Roehrdanz, 1997). For example, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Thrips palmi Karny (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) have reduced susceptibility to some insecticides used commercially in Japan (Hayashi, 1992; Morishita, 1993; Tatara & Suzuki, 1993).Reliable identification of the immature stages is advantageous when applying early control measures. Based on morphological characteristics, Miyazaki & Kudo (1986) published a key to second instar larvae of 13 species of thrips occurring in Japan. However, such discrimination requires considerable taxonomic expertise and time, and first instar larvae were not distinguishable. Murai (1990) reported an isozyme analysis method that discriminated between the immature stages of nine species. Since F. occidentalis invaded Japan after this study (Hayase & Fukuda, 1991), no comparable data for this species are available. The main drawback with enzyme electrophoresis is that enzyme
