The appearance of this retrospective article in the December 1994 issue ofThe FASEB Journal marks anexact 10th anniversary since the seminal papers under review were published, in November and December 1984 (2, 3). Dr. Dinarelloalso wrote a review on the biology of interleukin-1 in an earlyissue of the FJ (2: 108-155, 1988), which,with its current 930 citations, has become the mostwidely quoted of any FJ review and a contributor to the total number of citations that led to the author being listed by the Institute of Scientific Information as the 8th most cited scientist in 1992.
