I already engulfed the industrialized West. The break-up of the Soviet Union, for instance, has unleashed democratic impulses while promoting nationalistic tendencies in the face of a wave of worldwide capitalism. Both the scholarly pundits and the popular press are now speaking of the world economy and of the cultural conflicts brought on by new communications technologies, from cable TV to satellites and fax machines.
