Morphology of the macula densa There is a close and unvarying anatomic relationship between the glomerulus, the macula densa region of the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, the extraglomerular mesangium (which consists of Goormaghtigh cells), and the juxtaglomerular cells of the afferent arteriole; together they form the juxtaglomerular apparatus [4](Fig. 1).
